Educational Goals
- Train Emergency Physicians to a high level of clinical competence in the evaluation
and treatment of patients of all ages who present to the Emergency Department.
- Train Emergency Physicians to effectively manage and prioritize the care of multiple patients.
- Develop effective interpersonal and communication skills through patient care, staff, and multidisciplinary interactions.
- Develop an awareness of the cost-effective and time-efficient use of diagnostic studies in emergency medicine while maintaining quality of care.
- Develop an understanding of how to provide optimal patient care within the larger health care system.
- Develop awareness of aspects of preventive medicine, which impact on emergency medicine.
- Teach Emergency Physicians how to identify, treat, and manage patients and families who have been exposed to family violence.

- Teach Emergency Physicians the medical/legal aspects of emergency medicine practice.
- Develop effective management skills that will enable the Emergency Physician to administer Emergency Departments and EMS systems.
- To teach residents to understand and apply the principles of continuous quality improvement.
- Teach Emergency Physicians the fundamental qualities of professionalism with an emphasis on the provision of care that is compassionate, ethical, and culturally sensitive.
- To teach Emergency Medicine Physicians to deal with the ethical issues related to their practice.
- Establish a practice of on-going self-education in Emergency Medicine including development of the skills necessary to critically evaluate the Emergency Medicine literature.
- Develop resident teaching skills.
- Provide Emergency Physicians with personal techniques for stress management, physical, and mental health to promote well-being throughout their Emergency Medicine careers.
- Promote hospital and community leadership in Emergency Medicine.
- Develop skills to enable Emergency Physicians to plan and execute a research project and prepare a manuscript for publication.
- Identify potential academic leaders in the field of Emergency Medicine and support their development.
- Prepare Emergency Medicine residents for successful completion of the American Board of Emergency Medicine Certification Examination and toprovide residents with the skills needed for life-long learning.
