PGY2EM (26 weeks) - Working shifts on the West Side of the ED, second-year EM residents increase the volume of patients they see. PEDS-EM (6 weeks) - As with Adult West shifts, you are expected to see a greater volume of patients during your second year in the Peds ED, and you often will end up performing resuscitations. Again, you work 18-20 ten-hour shifts during your six weeks in PEDS-EM. Burn/Trauma ICU (3 weeks) - This is a high-yield, three-week rotation with lots of independence. Strong's Burn/Trauma ICU is the regional referral Center for the geographic area between Buffalo and Syracuse and all the way south into northern Pennsylvania. Your three weeks will provide you with lots of experience in burn and major trauma management, as well as providing ample opportunity for procedures. Call is Q3 days. EMS (2 weeks) - The EMS rotation is an introduction to the concepts of emergency medical services and workings of EMS in our region. Ride-alongs are scheduled. Surgical ICU (3 weeks) -The SICU rotation is another high-yield, three-week rotation with lots of independence. There are plenty of opportunities for handling procedures and gaining valuable experience with a full range of sick surgical patients, including pre- and post-transplant cases. Call is Q3 days. Vacation (4 weeks)- Four weeks of vacation split up into one- or two-week blocks. Cardiology (4 weeks) - While on the Cardiology Clinical Consult Service, you will round on floor consults and see ED consults while on call. You'll get lots of bedside exposure, as well as focused EKG instruction by the staff cardiologists. Each resident takes two nights per week and one weekend of home call. Elective (4 weeks) - One month is available during your second year to go abroad, learn a language, study a sub-specialty, or fill in some gaps in your knowledge base. A special learning/teaching elective is available where you'll design your own curriculum, set learning goals, and provide instruction to medical students and other EM residents or EMS providers. |
