Program Strengths

Not Your Typical ResidencySimulation
Ask any of our past and present residents "What makes a Rochester residency extra special?" The overwhelming response will be "the people." During your three years here, you'll form strong bonds with dedicated and compassionate faculty who go the extra distance to help maximize your career potential. You'll work side-by-side with fellow residents whose camaraderie and friendships extend far beyond the ED. And you'll gain knowledge and experience from other exceptional members of our team that will contribute to making your residency a rich, rewarding, and memorable experience. Here are some of the key attributes that make our EM residency one of the finest programs in the U.S.

  • State-of-the-art facility incorporates Level 1 Trauma Center, poison control center, observation unit and the region's only burn, tertiary pediatric, comprehensive psychiatric, and spinal cord units.
  • Our ED sees nearly 100,000 patients per year. Nnearly all of our patients (about 90%) have access to primary care. This means fewer non-urgent patients and easier dispositions. So instead of dealing with a dysfunctional social system, you can concentrate on acute care.
  • Diverse, nationally recognized faculty with expertise in education, pediatrics, head injury, EMS, toxicology, ultrasound, international medicine, sports medicine, and patient safety
  • Coordinated curriculum, which includes simulation workshops as well as cadaver and procedure labs

Rotation Strengths

  • Pediatric experience in all three years of residency, allowing progressive responsibility and providing the level of training required to care for the Pedssickest infants and children
  • Designated shifts in our seven-bed trauma/critical care suite during PGY-2 and PGY-3.
  • Designated ultrasound rotation
  • Opportunity to do "away" electives, including international EM
  • Financial support for participation in local and national conferences

Additional attributes

  • Close affiliation with the Finger Lakes Poison Control Center, located within our medical center
  • Center for Bioterrorism Management, under the direction of Dr. Glenn Currier
  • Monroe County's EMS Medical Director, Dr. Jeremy Cushman, is a member of the EM faculty
  • Interested in international medicine? We have active programs in Kosovo, Africa, and Central America. Rochester’s new Center for Global Health, in conjunction with our International Emergency Medicine Fellowship, offers the option for an MPH as well as international experiences.
  • Home of the Nation's Largest Observation Unit. Ours is not your typical chest pain unit; we are redefining and expanding the scope of observation. Not only is this a Simulatorfull-spectrum 24-hour-stay unit, it also incorporates an inpatient unit for stays up to 72 hours. This unique facility decreases length of stay, helps to unload the ED, and expands specialty of acute care medicine. An additional 22 bed unit opened in November 2007.
  • In addition, our Pediatric and EMS Fellowships offer an MPH incorporated into a rigorous program, and our Sports Medicine Program offers opportunities to work with an EM/Sports Medicine specialist with many field opportunities.
