Projects and Mentors

Selecting your Project

Time is short, so selecting a project takes thoughtful planning. You may already have a topic to explore. If you don't, remember that topics may evolve from clinical questions that arise on the medicine floors, subspeciality services, or in the clinic. The ability to transform your question into a project is the key to success. If you are undecided about a project, review the mentoring catalog which includes faculty areas of interest to get some ideas.

Finding a Mentor

Currently, 90 faculty members in the Departments of Medicine and Public Health have volunteered to be mentors. Contact them by email, phone, or regular mail. Review the mentorship catalog at the end of this page. At the end of the mentor profile you will find the names of residents who have worked with that faculty member. You could contact the resident about his/her experience.

Clinical Research

If you have interests in clinical research, you can review the Clinical Trials Directory at the University of Rochester. The University of Rochester also has a Clinical Research Resource Center. Investigators at any level can access existing patient databases and start a clinical trial. If you or your mentor wish to access the Clinical Research Resource Inventory, you should email Thomas Fogg, to become an authorized user.

Miner Digital Library

To get project ideas and published information, start with the digital library at the Edward G. Miner Library at Strong Memorial Hospital. To access the digital library click here. Under Ovid Online, you'll find Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) resources such as the ACP (American College of Physicians) Journal Club and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. You'll see search resources, including Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed. (Instructions on how to perform an Ovid search are available.) Other useful sites are Users' Guides Interactive and Users' Guides to Evidence-Based Practice.

Other Resources

Many fellowships in the Department of Medicine offer research as part of their training programs. Click here for further information. In addition, the American Board of Internal Medicine has established a Research Pathway consisting of a minimum of two clinical years and three research years. If you are interested in this research pathway, contact Donald Bordley, M.D.

If you are having difficulty deciding on a project, please notify John Grable, M.D. well in advance of your rotation start date.

Mentorship Catalog

Each mentor has submitted a profile outlining his or her interests in more detail.  To see these profiles, click on the link at the bottom of each department unit listing. You will also find the names of the residents who have worked with a particular mentor.
