Research ProposalResidents planning to do the research option (continue research in PGY-2 and PGY-3) should use the PGY-1 block to develop a research proposal that will be completed over the PGY-2/3 years. The proposal (one or two pages) should be completed and handed in to John Grable, M.D. at the end of the PGY-1 rotation or before starting the PGY-2 rotation. Click here for the proposal format. Case ReportCase reports are a valuable way to add to the medical literature and gain scholarship experience. Interesting cases or unusual presentations that you encounter may be suitable for case reports. If you encounter such a case, you can ask the attending physician caring for the patient to assist you. An alternative is to find a mentor for the case report through the mentorship catalog. Click here for a useful reference (1) for a case report. Consult the journal you're interested in for its specific format requirements. AbstractAbstracts are frequently required to make selections for presentations at scientific meetings. Examples of clinical and research abstracts can be found at the American College of Physicians (ACP) website. For a general overview of abstract preparation, go to the ACP site at www.acponline.org. Click on "Residents/Fellows" then "Competitions". Useful sections include “Writing a Research Abstract” and “Glossary of Common Research Terms." This information applies to most abstracts. However, each society has individual abstract instructions. Clinical Topic ReviewClinical review articles or updates review the medical literature while discussing a topic. The best review articles base a discussion on existing systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Click here for a useful reference (2) for starting a topic review with many Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) resources. For an example of a clinical review see reference (3). PostersPoster sessions are useful, popular forums to present research and clinical work. For an overview that discusses preparation, timelines, and rules go to www.acponline.org. Click on "Residents/Fellows" then "Competitions". Useful section include the “Guide to preparing for the Competition” and “Preparing a Poster Presentation." PowerPoint tutorials for poster making are also given each Fall, before Resident-Student Poster Day at Strong. Forums for Residents to Present Case Reports, Abstracts, and Posters
