Research Proposal

Residents planning to do the research option (continue research in PGY-2 and PGY-3) should use the PGY-1 block to develop a research proposal that will be completed over the PGY-2/3 years. The proposal (one or two pages) should be completed and handed in to John Grable, M.D. at the end of the PGY-1 rotation or before starting the PGY-2 rotation. Click here for the proposal format.

Case Report

Case reports are a valuable way to add to the medical literature and gain scholarship experience. Interesting cases or unusual presentations that you encounter may be suitable for case reports. If you encounter such a case, you can ask the attending physician caring for the patient to assist you. An alternative is to find a mentor for the case report through the mentorship catalog. Click here for a useful reference (1) for a case report. Consult the journal you're interested in for its specific format requirements.

Abstract

Abstracts are frequently required to make selections for presentations at scientific meetings. Examples of clinical and research abstracts can be found at the American College of Physicians (ACP) website. For a general overview of abstract preparation, go to the ACP site at www.acponline.org. Useful sections include“Writing a Research Abstract” and “Glossary of Common Research Terms." This information applies to most abstracts. However, each society has individual abstract instructions. Abstracts from prior ACP meetings are available in the Michael Rodgers Library on the 7th floor of Strong Memorial Hospital.

Clinical Topic Review

Clinical review articles or updates review the medical literature while discussing a topic. The best review articles base a discussion on existing systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Click here for a useful reference (2) for starting a topic review with many Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) resources. For an example of a clinical review see reference (3).

Posters

Poster sessions are useful, popular forums to present research and clinical work. For an overview that discusses preparation, timelines, and rules go to www.acponline.org. Useful section include the “ACP Guide” and “Preparing a Poster Presentation." PowerPoint tutorials for poster making are also given each Fall, before Resident-Student Poster Day at Strong.

Forums for Residents to Present Case Reports, Abstracts, and Posters

  • Resident-Student Poster Day. Held each fall at Strong Memorial Hospital prior to the regional New York Upstate American College of Physicans meeting. The event has two poster sessions, with oral presentations given to judges. The categories for submission are Clinical Vignette, Scientific and Public Policy/Patient Outcomes. Prizes for winners include cash and departmental recognition. Click here for more information.

  • Regional and National American College of Physicians Abstract and Poster Competitions. Residents can submit abstracts to these invitational competitions. For more details on the Upstate ACP meeting, visit www.acponline.org/chapters/NY. For the National ACP abstract competition, go to www.acponline.org/srf. Click on “Students/Residents” and then “Abstract competitions."

  • Grand Rounds Resident Reviews. Each May residents can present clinical cases or scientific work as short talks in a Grand Rounds session. Contact Dr. John Grable with questions.

  • Poster Day at Rochester General Hospital. Each Spring a poster session is hosted by the Rochester General Hospital (RGH) Internal Medicine Residency program. Residents from programs at Strong are invited to present posters at this session, along with the RGH residents. Contact Deb Majszak for more information.
