Visiting Medical Student Intro

We strongly encourage applicants to consider a Neurosurgery subinternship at the University of Rochester Medical Center.  While on service, subinterns participate in every aspect of the program, including morning rounds, sign in rounds, conferences, assisting in the O.R., and taking call in tandem with a Neurosurgery resident to learn about the assessment and care of acutely ill patients.  At the beginning of the rotation, subinterns are given a copy of Greenberg’s Neurosurgery, and are oriented to the service and to important learning objectives by the Chief Resident and Program Director.  At the end of the rotation, subinterns are expected to participate in conference through a short presentation on a topic of Neurosurgical interest.

A strong point of our subinternship is the opportunity to focus your activities on patient assessment and acquisition of surgical experience in the operating room.

A real strength of our residency program is provided by an outstanding group of 12 nurse practitioners who attend sign in rounds each morning, and participate actively with the resident staff in the care of in-patients on service. As a consequence of this partnership, our resident staff and subinterns are able to focus their attention effectively upon the diagnostic and surgical components of Neurosurgical practice.

Please contact the Resident Coordinator at (585) 275-0060 for information or to arrange a subinternship.  The Resident Coordinator will coordinate the administrative arrangements with the University of Rochester  School of Medicine and Dentistry Registrar's office at (585) 275-4541.  We welcome the opportunity to talk with you.
