Research Facilities

Our research facilities consist of:

Frank P. Smith Neurosurgical Laboratory
The research activity of Dr. Berislav Zlokovic takes place in the 2,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art Frank P. Smith Neurovascular Biology Lab, housed in URMC's new medical research building. This laboratory offers training at multiple levels, from animal models to human cellular and molecular studies of clinically and neurosurgically relevant research. This space serves as the nucleus for the research efforts of PGY-5 residents. Dr. Zlokovic is the department's Associate Chair for Research. He and his co-researchers have secured more than $4 million in NIH funding.

Neuroanatomy Laboratory
Dr. Shirley Joseph conducts research in approximately 1,000 square feet of laboratory space dedicated to neuroanatomic and histopathologic characterization of hippocampus microanatomy from surgical temporal lobe specimens. Dr. Joseph has had continuous NIH funding—currently a grant for $585,000.
