Journal Club

Journal Club is held monthly as part of the Resident Lecture Series and is attended by all residents, medical students on rotation, and a designated faculty mentor. All other faculty are invited to attend as participants.  The format is based on the Michigan State University Journal Club Learning Series and all residents complete the learning modules designed to foster critical evaluation of peer-reviewed literature. The learning modules and articles are posted on Blackboard. Articles for Journal Club are chosen by the faculty mentor in consultation with the Resident Curriculum Committee - articles suggested by residents are also incorporated. Both current articles from peer-reviewed journals and “classic” articles from the obstetrics & gynecology literature are reviewed. In general, two articles are reviewed and discussed at each session. All residents and participant faculty are expected to have read the articles, completed the Journal Club Checklist for each, and to be prepared to actively participate in discussion of the articles.

Learning Objectives:

  • To locate, appraise, and assimilate evidence from scientific studies related to clinical care.
  • To evaluate scientific evidence and implement practice changes with the goal of enhancing patient safety and quality of care.
  • To appraise and understand the “classic” scientific studies that have influenced and changed the practice of obstetrics & gynecology and re-assess the scientific evidence in the context of current practice.
  • To use information obtained from critical evaluation of the scientific literature to improve one’s ability to act in a consultative and educational role for other physicians and health professionals.
  • To promote life-long learning skills in evidence-based medicine.
  • To provide an interactive opportunity for peer-to-peer learning.
