Our Facilities

Our program currently has 32 residents (eight at each level) who rotate between Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital.

Strong Memorial Hospital

Strong Memorial Hospital is an integral part of the University of Rochester Medical Center. It is a tertiary care center with 750 beds providing care for the Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York.

A majority of faculty members are actively conducting sponsored research in most major diseases and organ systems. In recent years, the School of Medicine and Dentistry has ranked in the top 30 of the nation's 125 medical schools in funding from the National Institutes of Health. About 243 of the full-time faculty serve as principal investigators on NIH-funded projects. In 2000, the University of Rochester Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology ranked 11th in the nation among ob/gyn departments in terms of NIH-funded research.

OB/GYN Resources at Strong

Much of the third floor of the hospital is dedicated to the care of women and infants. It includes:

  • 26 labor suites in the Spiroff Birthcenter, which has only private rooms and follows a labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum model (LDRP).
  • A dedicated high-risk labor unit, with seven private labor and delivery suites, which provides labor, delivery, and recovery care for high-risk pregnancies; there is separate dedicated unit of 26 beds for postpartum, antepartum, and inpatient gynecology care.
  • Two dedicated obstetrical ORs located within high-risk labor unit, with 24-hour dedicated anesthesia for both labor and operative delivery pain control options.
  • A level three NICU with a full-time on-call “delivery team” is also located on this floor.
  • An ambulatory surgery center for pediatrics, ophthalmology, and gynecology, located on the second floor of Strong, houses three dedicated GYN ORs within a seven-suite OR.

Within Strong's Ambulatory Care Facility, the fifth floor is dedicated to women’s health care. Resident clinics as well as the Special Care Program and pediatric & adolescent gynecology facilities are centered here. The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has its own ultrasound center, in which 20,000 scans are performed annually. This floor also houses an antenatal testing unit, genetics program, and several obstetrical specialty clinics.

The urogynecology and reproductive endocrinology services also have their outpatient clinics in the Ambulatory Care Facility.

Highland Hospital

Highland Hospital is a community-based hospital that is affiliated with the Strong Health system. It has active obstetrics, gynecology, and gynecologic oncology services. Approximately 2,000 gynecology surgeries are performed there each year.

OB/GYN Resources at Highland

  • A six-room labor-delivery-recovery suite and 30 postpartum rooms
  • Two dedicated obstetrical ORs within the obstetrical suite, as well as one GYN operating room
  • Seven main operating rooms, three of which are devoted to gynecology and gynecologic oncology

In addition, Highland's East 5 wing is devoted to women’s health care, housing post-operative patients for both gynecology and gynecologic oncology, as well as breast surgery patients. The East 6 wing is home to the outpatient OB/GYN resident clinic, as well as the midwives' practice.
