Maternal-Fetal Medicine
About the DivisionThe majority of all deliveries in the Rochester metropolitan area are performed at Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH) or its educational affiliates. Last year, 6,700 births occurred within the residency program's teaching hospitals. Approximately 30% of the patients who deliver at SMH are high risk, which provides for an active Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The Division has its own ultrasound center, in which 20,000 scans are performed annually. There is an antenatal testing unit, genetics program, and several obstetrical specialty clinics. The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is the regional referral group for high-risk obstetrical transfers from a 10-county area. The Strong Memorial Hospital neonatal intensive care unit is a level IV center that accepts transfers from throughout central New York State. This facility is equipped with the latest in medical and computer technology and places the Department at the forefront of obstetrical care.
