Night Call Responsibilities

A night float system is in place at Strong Memorial Hospital. Residents at each level participate in the night float team for 6-7 weeks a year (divided into two blocks). Overall, call is at most Q7. At Highland Hospital, call is shared with Family Medicine residents and varies by year. On average call is Q4-7. The night float system covers both obstetrics and gynecology; therefore, there is no separate call for the gynecology service.

Holiday Float System

A holiday float system is in place with residents spliting the holidays at both Strong and Highland Hospitals so each half of the housestaff receives either Christmas or New Year's off on a request basis. The intern class includes Thanksgiving in their float system so each resident receives either Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's off.

Work Hours

New York State law requires limitation of working hours for all housestaff in the following ways:

  • No more than 12 consecutive hours in direct patient care activities when assigned to the Emergency Department
  • No more than 24 consecutive hours in direct patient care activities when assigned to inpatient units
  • No more than 80 work hours per week, averaged over each 4-week period
  • 24 duty-free hours during each work week
