The program is extremely balanced in every sense: University tertiary care plus community hospital experienced, fully subspecialized and diversified faculty, high volume pediatrics and both Level 1 as well as geriatric trauma services, number 1 NIH ranked orthopaedic research department with both strong basic and clinical research.

  • High volumes and large number of attendings means rarely more than one resident scrubbed with attending on surgical cases
  • Fellowships offered only in high volume subspecialities (1 slot each in Hand, Sports, Spine and Foot and Ankle) where multiple attendings ensures fellowship does not impact residency training, which is our priority.
  • Huge surgical and outpatient clinical volumes—over 140,000 outpatient visits and 8,000 surgeries per year
  • Outstanding basic research infrastructure and laboratory opportunities/exposure for trainees
  • No clinical "holes" or deficiencies—every subspecialty of orthopaedics is covered by skilled full-time faculty
  • Multiple faculty even in rare areas such as oncology, metabolic bone disease, and foot/ankle surgery
  • Full range of rehabilitation services and faculty within the Department
  • One of the strongest molecular biological research operations in any orthopaedic department
  • Extensive collaborations with bioengineering, including two engineering faculty
  • Identical residency experiences for all trainees, with optional extra research year
  • Outstanding track record of achievement by trainees—7 orthopaedic department chairs, 40% trainees, in academic positions; top fellowship slots consistently
  • Nationally known faculty in many areas, including Spine, Sports, Oncology, Research, Foot and Ankle and Hand Surgery Joint Orthopaedic/Plastics service
  • Sound financial footing of Department and institution
  • State-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinic with digital x-rays, and imaging, EMR, high level of efficiency, etc.
  • Excellent faculty stability and growth
  • Excellent support and collaboration with key interacting departments, including plastic surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, pathology, and radiology
