Application Process

The University of Rochester selects all applicants at the PL-1 level through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). Our NRMP program number is 1511320C0.

There are no PL-1, PL-2, or PL-3 openings for the 2009-2010 academic year. We are accepting applications for 2010-2011 academic year beginning September 1, 2009.

Applicants are required to apply to the Pediatrics Residency Program using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) system. Information regarding how to use the ERAS system can be obtained from the Dean's office of your medical school or by linking to it here.

The deadline for submitting an application is November 30, 2009.

Items to Include as Part of ERAS Application:

  1. Full name, address, phone number, email address, social security number
  2. List ALL years since completion of undergraduate school: include education, leaves of absence, employment, travel, other experiences, etc.
  3. Include date and place of birth
  4. Include citizenship
  5. Include type of visa if applicable (Only J-1 visas accepted)
  6. Include ECFMG number if applicable
  7. Dean's letter
  8. Medical school transcript

  11. At least two letters of recommendation (if you are not able to provide a Chair's letter, a third letter of recommendation will suffice)
  12. Personal statement
  13. A recent photograph of yourself

Additional Criteria:

International medical school graduates must complete at least two months of clinical training in an ACGME-approved pediatric program or a similar program in the United States, Canada or England. A listing of these programs can be found in the ACGME "green book." Observerships and research are not acceptable as clinical training. International medical school graduates who have met these requirements should obtain a letter to that effect from the clinical advisor of the rotation and submit it with your ERAS application.

All national and international medical school graduates need to have graduated from medical school within the last 10 years. We accept both USMLE and COMLEX scores. There are no minimum test score requirements and there are no limits on the number of attempts to pass your USMLE or COMLEX exams. We sponsor J-1 visas only and only if all other criteria are met.

If you are applying to both the Pediatrics and Medicine/Pediatrics training programs at the University of Rochester, you will need to convey that to both program coordinators so a single, joint interview day can be arranged. The Medicine/Pediatrics web page can be found here.

After your interview, please make a note to return to fill out our Interview Feedback Form. We are very interested in your thoughts about your interview experience.
