Program Details
The fundamental goal of our postgraduate program is the personal and professional growth of each trainee in his or her preparation for a lifelong dedication to children through professional commitment to pediatrics. We approach this goal by being dedicated to the well-being of all children and their families; providing multiple educational opportunities in several distinct settings; gradually increasing trainee responsibilities and learning opportunities; and providing close contact with a variety of professional role models. Our aim is to develop those values central to being a physician: responsibility, thoroughness, availability, and sensitivity to the needs of children and their families; a scientifically cultivated and inquiring mind; the capacity to handle uncertainty; critical (and accurate) self-appraisal; and continual self-growth.
We emphasize those skills specific to physicians caring for children: the true enjoyment of working with infants, children, adolescents, and young adults; the development of communication skills with children and their families; an appreciation of the development of children; a knowledge of childhood diseases and the pathophysiologic basis for those diseases; and an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention.
We enjoy a rich tradition of excellence in preparing pediatricians and we are continually enriching those qualities of our training program. Our outstanding past and current strength in primary care pediatrics is now complemented by similar levels of excellence in all subspecialty areas, with an emphasis on inquiry into the basis for health promotion, prevention, and treatment of disease.
