Teaching Conferences and RoundsMuch of the learning in our PM&R Residency Program occurs in one-on-one attending/resident patient rounds or in formal/informal settings in small groups discussing aspects of diagnosis and patient management. Activities can include:
Each year a qualified trainee is appointed to serve as PM&R chief resident. Chief residents gain administrative experience by being responsible for scheduling, managing the on-call rotation and arranging the Teaching Day schedules. Each resident is expected to take a leadership role in assisting and teaching junior residents and medical students. Rehabilitation Grand RoundsStructured, formal teaching sessions for residents take place weekly. The format varies between formal lecture and case/patient presentations. Speakers include faculty from other URMC departments, as well as PM&R faculty and outside invited speakers. All PM&R residents are required to give a Grand Rounds presentation annually on a topic of their choice, with assistance and mentoring provided by a selected faculty member. PM&R Lecture SeriesLectures are scheduled weekly, typically during Teaching Day. All courses (excluding the "Introduction to..." series) are followed by a written examination and, in some instances, an oral or practical examination. Attendance at lectures is mandatory, and a passing grade must be attained on the examinations in all courses for graduation from the residency. Journal ClubJournal Club, which takes place every month, helps residents develop critical literature review skills necessary for self-directed learning. Residents choose their articles in consultation with a faculty member, and the articles are critiqued for research design and their contribution to knowledge in the field. Other Educational OpportunitiesStrong Memorial Hospital and Unity Health System have a wide range of routine medical conferences that PM&R residents may attend when pertinent, including medicine and neurology grand rounds, geriatric grand rounds at Monroe Community Hospital , pediatric grand rounds, and neurosurgery-neuroradiology grand rounds. Local and regional conferences (eg. biennial EMG and orthotics/prosthetics courses in nearby Buffalo and Syracuse) are also identified for residents to attend. All residents are given support to defray the cost of travel to an approved national conference and for purchase of approved educational materials. Spinal Cord Injury Health FairEvery year, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department sponsors a Spinal Cord Injury Health Fair – a consumer-oriented, consumer-targeted, one-day event chock full of information and demonstrations for attendees. PM&R residents are heavily involved – teaching, learning and gaining exposure to the many aspects of their medical discipline. The Health Fair includes several 45-60 minute talks on healthy living, research updates, psycho-social issues, rehabilitation techniques, advocacy and many other topics. A number of area vendors come and support the event both financially and with information / demonstration tables. Community interest is high and the experience is first-rate. |
On inpatient rehabilitation units, attendings round with residents every day. Residents present their history and physical exam, synthesis and suggested course of management to the attending for review and guidance. Progressive responsibility for patient management is given to the resident as he/she displays improved assessment and management skills.
