Program Overview
Our categorical, four-year Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program accepts candidates at the first-year resident (PGY-1) level. We participate in the National Resident Matching Program, therefore candidates must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service ERAS). Minimum qualifications include a medical degree, such as M.D., D.O., or M.B.B.S. Candidates must successfully complete Step I of the United States Medical Licensing Examination or COMLEX Part I (for Osteopathic graduates), and possess a J-1 Visa or permanent resident status (if not a U.S. citizen). International medical graduates (IMGs) may apply. In addition to the requirements above, IMGs must have successfully completed USMLE Step 2, and must be ECFMG certified by February 1st. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, medical school transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and an ECFMG status report (if applicable).
For successful transition from first-year resident to a PM&R specialist competent to practice independently in multiple settings, a resident must assimilate vast amounts of information and acquire specialized skills. Specific annual goals and objectives must be met prior to advancing to the next level. Appropriate supervision and guidance are provided to each resident as he or she progresses in terms of knowledge and skills. The program director meets with each resident formally at least twice per year, and more frequently if desired, to discuss progress and formal evaluations, and identify areas for further growth.
