Program Strengths
The Psychiatry Department’s tradition of providing outstanding education and training—established by Drs. John Romano and George Engel in the late 1940s—continues today through the residency program's devotion to:
- Providing high-quality medical education.
- Setting the standard for outstanding clinical care.
- Stimulating enthusiasm for scholarly research.
Among its many strengths, our residency program:
- Accepts only four residents per year. This small class size:
- Creates a real sense of connection and camaraderie within the program.
- Allows all of our residents to get to know one another and interact on many different levels.
- Gives us the flexibility to customize the training experience to address residents' specific interests and educational goals.
- Encourages informal and collegial relationships between trainees and faculty. This results in a comfortable and supportive environment in which to work and learn.
- Provides residents with a range of unique opportunities, including:
- A Psychiatric Emergency Room.
- Strong Ties, a community based support program providing comprehensive outpatient mental health services to adults with severe mental illnesses.
- Our Deaf Wellness Clinic, providing complete care for people who are hearing impaired.
- A Perinatal Consultation Clinic, providing consultation resources for women during the perinatal period.
- Offers several fellowship training opportunities including Child Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatric, and Forensic Psychiatry.
- Enables residents and their families to feel at home in a very livable city with a good and affordable standard of living. Rochester is a mid-sized city that's small enough to make it easy get around, and large enough to provide lots of sports, entertainment, and cultural options. These include professional baseball, hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams, a wide range of clubs and special events, and internationally renowned attractions like the Eastman School of Music.
