Benefits for Psychiatry Residents and Fellows, 2007-2008

Vacation

Residents receive four calendar weeks of paid vacation per year.

Educational Leave

PGY-2, -3 and -4 residents are eligible for one week of educational leave annually to attend local or national scientific or medical meetings or conferences.

Maternity Leave

Six weeks of paid “maternity leave” is available under medical disability coverage. Additional unpaid leave is available under the Family Leave Act up to a combined total of 12 weeks.

Paternity Leave

Fathers are eligible for up to one week of paid paternity leave.

Moonlighting

Residents who wish to earn additional income through elective outside professional opportunities are permitted to do so following the first half of the PGY-2 year. This requires the approval of the Program Director, based on satisfactory discharge of his/her clinical responsibilities and educational progress. Although a New York State medical license is not required for residency training, it is required for any additional professional activities.

Printed appointment cards are provided for all residents, PGY-2 year and above.

Residents are provided with a professional stipend that can be used for attendance at conferences, books, licensure fees, exam fees, etc.

Travel Allowance

$500 is available for residents presenting at a national conference.

Computers

A computer is provided in each resident office. Computers are linked to a network printer and/or an in-office printer.

Retreats

Residents participate in Fall and Spring off-site retreats, organized by the Chief Resident. These retreats give residents time to spend together as a group; to develop policy recommendations and feedback concerning the program to the Residency Curriculum Committee; and to discuss educational and career opportunities.

Education Resource Room

The Department of Psychiatry provides this multidisciplinary room for psychiatry residents, ACGME fellows, psychology doctoral interns and psychology postdoctoral fellows in our accredited programs. It offers a large, comfortable gathering place complete with a small conference table, three computers, a color printer, a network printer, refrigerator, microwave, cabled television with DVD player, and an extensive collection of reference and library books. It also has a separate, quiet, comfortable room for studying, reading, and viewing video materials.

Edward G. Miner Library

Resident Luncheons

Every Tuesday at noon, residents come together for a department-sponsored luncheon to discuss business, clinical, or personal development matters.  They are joined twice a month by the Program Directors and Administrator and quarterly by the Department Chair, Associate Chair for Academic Affairs, and Associate Chair for Clinical Services.

Offices

Comfortable offices equipped with a computer are provided for each resident. PGY-1 and -2 residents are assigned a two-person office. PGY-3 and -4 residents have individual offices.

Ambulatory Dictation System and EMR

The Soft-Med system, a digital dictation system interface (DDSI), is used for all ambulatory dictations. We also now have an Electronic Medical Record system.

Inpatient Dictation System

A phone-transmitted dictation system is used for all inpatient dictations.

U.S. Postal Office Substation

The substation, inside the Medical Center, gives you a convenient place to purchase stamps and send priority mail and packages.

Banking Facilities

A branch of Chase Manhattan Bank is located inside the Medical Center; ATMs are situated throughout the facility.

Lab Coats

Lab coats provided by the GME Office are monogrammed by the Department of Psychiatry.
