Why I Chose Rochester

I came to Rochester because the program clearly protects the education of it's residents, focusing on quality of training not quantity. This particularly relates to call, which is less frequent but always paired with an attending to make each contact an educational experience. The program also supports residents' pursuit of research interests and has an extensive faculty base for mentoring. Lastly, I think the residency administrators are very caring - they look out for the residents' well-being, point out opportunities for recognition and advancement, and help us navigate the ever-more-complicated training requirements for psychiatry residents.

As a resident I feel supported by the program and feel that I have the opportunity to explore my interests regardless of how diverse they may be. Overall the program offers excellent mentorship and amazing teaching. Most importantly there is a manageable workload allowing residents ample time to balance their personal lives with their professional interests. My wife and I bought a home within a few weeks of starting first year and we look forward to starting a family while we are in Rochester.

My fiancé and I were unable to couples match as she is a year ahead. We were looking at Rochester as we knew the programs were strong.  We chose Rochester because the psychiatry and medicine programs worked together to bring us to the residency and have worked to ensure that we have had vacations -and our wedding!- together. In addition to having excellent teaching and a collegial environment we have been impressed with how much the departments care about and value their residents.
