Program StrengthsSix-Year AccreditationThe University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry received an unprecedented six-year institutional accreditation for sponsorship of its residency programs from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME evaluates individual residency programs, as well as the sponsoring institution, to determine whether they are meeting an extensive and detailed set of standards. When the ACGME reviewed our overall graduate medical education program in 2006, they not only commended us, but awarded us an extra year of accreditation. This was truly unprecedented—previously, the maximum accreditation term the ACGME awarded to any medical school was five years. In a letter to David S. Guzick, Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the ACGME stated that "the residents lauded the institution for its many strengths," citing support from the graduate education office, leadership by program directors and department chairs, the collegial atmosphere demonstrated in the institution, and computer informatics systems. Our FacilitiesThe University of Rochester's primary teaching affiliate is Strong Memorial Hospital, which has been named one of the top 15 teaching hospitals in the United States by Solucient, a company that collects comprehensive data on hospitals and health systems in the country. Among the hospitals there are many features: a regional trauma center; pioneering transplant programs; esteemed programs for conditions such as Parkinson's, epilepsy, and other neuromuscular illnesses; cardiac care; and women's health, including high-risk pregnancy and infertility. Specialized pediatric services such as heart surgery and organ transplants are delivered through the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong. The Wilmot Cancer Center is one of the nation’s leading facilities for cancer treatment and research. The new Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building has helped researchers tackle some of the toughest problems in medicine and basic science. |
