Benefits

Medical Care & Insurance: Four levels of medical insurance are offered. The first level of coverage gives you and your family complete health care coverage. All house staff are enrolled in the prepaid health plan through the University Health Service (UHS) providing immediate availability of primary medical care for themselves and their family. If enrolled at UHS, visits are free and there is no co-pay. House staff, their spouses and dependent minor children are covered by Aetna Insurance through the UHS and by Major Medical insurance provided by the Hospital.

Dental Assistance Plan: After completing one year of service, house officers, their spouses, and dependent minor children are covered by the Dental Assistance Plan, which is paid for entirely by the University. This plan pays 100% of "reasonable and customary" charges for preventive care. For basic and major services, payments are made according to a schedule of benefits, subject to an annual deductible of $50 ($100 per family). For those house officers who have not been here one year, subsidized dental care is available in the SMH Dental Clinic.

Residents get off the days after call, usually no more than 80 hour work weeks, and 10 hours off between shifts. This time may be used for self-motivated study, to work on research, to relax with family and friends, or even to catch up on sleep.

Reduced rates are available at Zornow Gymnasium, the University of Rochester sports facility, which includes an olympic sized pool, squash and raquetball courts, several weight rooms and basketball courts. Zornow is a 5 minute drive from Strong Memorial Hospital.

Rates at the gym at Strong Memorial Hospital are very low. The gym is located on the ground floor, is very easily accessible, and includes several top notch exercise machines, an aerobic area, squash/raquetball courts, and basketball courts. Hospital basketball and volleyball leagues are in action year round.

This list is not intended to be exclusive to other benefits which are in existence. The University reserves the right to amend or alter these benefits during the year.
