Second Year (PGY-3)During the second year (PGY-3) of specialization, the associate resident in urology learns office urology and basic endoscopic procedures. Each resident participates in ward rounds; alternates on call from home approximately every third night; and attends all urologic seminars/conferences, including weekly seminars, journal reviews, uro-radiology and pathology conferences, and the monthly quality assurance meeting. The year is divided into four three-month rotations at Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH). For each rotation the PGY-3 resident is alternately assigned to one of two "teams" of full-time attending urologists with whom they participate in the care of their adult and pediatric patients. These patients are seen in the ambulatory and inpatient settings as well as in postoperative follow-up, in order to achieve optimal continuity of care. In the operating room, the resident is an active member of the urologic team in the three procedural operating rooms (open urologic surgery, endoscopic urology, and ESWL) and performs surgeries in these areas commensurate with ability. |
