Third Year (PGY-4)The third year (PGY-4) of training is dedicated largely to research and is an integral part of the Department's clinical and basic research programs. The research is partly directed and partly of the residents own choosing. An excellent research staff is available to support the studies underway. There is close collaboration between the departments of Pathology, Medicine, Community and Preventive Medicine, the Cancer Center, and Urology, among others. Presentations based on accepted abstracts are made at both regional and national meetings of the American Urological Association (AUA). The PGY-4 residents also attend at least one medicine-related course (for credit) per semester, at the University of Rochester campus or Medical School campus. Throughout the year, the PGY-4 residents are responsible for the urologic care of patients at Monroe Community Hospital, a municipal hospital with acute and chronic care missions. Currently, full-time members of the Department are principal investigators on NIH grants and all PGY-4 residents are assigned to mentors (in the Department of Urology or collaborating departments) who have current NIH support and ample experience in training graduate and postdoctoral students.
