Research and Education in Microbiology and Immunology
The Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) at the University of Rochester Medical Center is designed to encourage underrepresented minorities who hold a recent baccalaureate degree in the biomedically-relevant sciences, to pursue a research doctorate, and to prepare these trainees for careers as outstanding research scientists and leaders in the biomedical community. Trainees of this program will acquire stronger research skills by working under the direction of participating faculty mentors, and they will improve the skills and competitiveness necessary for the successful pursuit of a graduate degree (Ph.D.).
This training program will provide research and education opportunities in microbiology and immunology, that are of direct relevance to many of the health problems that disproportionately affect minorities and medically underserved groups (e.g., arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV and other STDs, and respiratory diseases).
This program is based at the University of Rochester Medical Center (Rochester, New York) and it is administered principally by faculty from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology. Other participating Departments and Centers include the Departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Environmental Medicine, Medicine, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, the Center for Oral Biology and the University of Rochester Cancer Center.
