The Division of the Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary
group drawn from the medical specialties and the humanities. Its
application of philosophy, history, literature, visual arts and jurisprudence
to the study of medicine and the care of patients is a part of
the University of Rochester's traditional consideration of the
social and ethical contexts of medicine.
The humanities are the hormones…To infect with the spirit of the Humanities is the greatest single gift in education.”
William Osler,The Old Humanities and the New Science, 1919.
"At the medical school, we hope to continue in this Oslerian tradition of training physicians and scientists who are infected with the spirit of the Humanities."
