University of Rochester - Medical Scientist Training Program

Activities Overview

Student Hosts & Revisit Weekend

Our MD/PhD students play a very active role in recruiting potential matriculants through their extensive involvement with hosting applicants, and planning/participating in Revisit Weekend activities. Activities during interview days include greeting applicants, hosting applicants in student homes, and dinner with MD/PhD students on Thursday night. Specific Revisit Weekend activities include a combined luncheon and poster session by current MD/PhD students that is attended by a large number of faculty, program directors and administrators, a student hosted dinner at a local venue, and a student organized tour of Rochester with an emphasis on housing options.

Local & National Meetings

Student Biking in Colorado

In addition to attending meetings in their specific fields during graduate school, our students take advantage of opportunities to interact with MD/PhD students from other programs. Locally, MD/PhD students attend the Annual Upstate New York MD/PhD Research Conference, held jointly with MD/PhD students from Syracuse and Buffalo. Four students, representing various stages of the program, attend the National MD/PhD Student's Conference in Colorado each summer. Students are also active in the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) which hosts meeting at multiple venue's. For example, three students represented Rochester at the MD/PhD Social Science and Humanities Conference entitled Practicing Theory, Theorizing Practice: Physician Scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities, which took place at the University of San Francisco this past May. Finally, MD/PhD students are invited to participate in select recruiting events such as Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). All of these meetings represent outstanding opportunities to network with MD/PhD students and learn about other programs, current research, and career options.

Social Events

Students Rafting the Black River, New York

Throughout the year, MSTP students organize events about every other month. These include a celebration for students graduating from the program in May, events that take advantage of opportunities in upstate New York, including skiing, apple picking, white-water rafting, and wine tasting, and theme dinners at student homes. These events are always well attended and enjoyed by spouses, significant others, program directors and our administrators.
