For me, Rochester has been a great place to live and study. The cost of living is perfect for graduate students, with some students buying their own homes or renting quite comfortable apartments.

Housing options for students abound in Rochester. Students can elect to live in University Housing, which is available for both singles and families a short distance from the Medical Center. The Medical Center is in a residential neighborhood, bordering the Genesse River, so opportunities for renting or purchasing homes within walking distance exist. A little further from the Medical School (2-3 miles) are affordable and comfortable apartment and townhouse options, some near Highland Park, the site of the annual spring Lilac Festival. Many additional rental options can be found in larger homes in the upscale Park Avenue District, with close proximity to major attractions on the East End of the city, including the Eastman School of Music. If city living does not suit your style, there are rural and park-like settings 10 to 15 min from the School, including open horse farms and agricultural areas. Because of the relatively low cost of housing in Rochester, approximately one-half of students elect to purchase homes or condominiums, many in their first year here. The wide range of housing options, affordability and easy accessibility to both city and rural areas provides outstanding opportunity to establish a place you can call home.
