University of Rochester - Medical Scientist Training Program

Student Life

MD/PhD students at Rochester participate in a wide variety of student-directed organizations. Many of these are listed on the Medical Student Website. Some groups focus on career pathways or cultural connections while others concentrate on specific extra-curricular activities. Of particular relevance to Rochester's Biopsychosocial view that Community is a major factor in individual health, there are a number of opportunities for students to engage in clinic-based community efforts. Many of these later opportunities are summarized in a listing of Outreach Programs including experiences that are specifically geared for students. Further details about these opportunities can be found at the Medical Center's Student Enrichment Program Site. This site also includes information about possible International Medicine opportunities for medical students. In several instances, MD/PhD students have been able to set up international opportunities with research components relevant to their areas of interest.

Many of our students also serve as mentors to undergraduate and younger students. Specific undergraduate research opportunities include the GEBS Summer Scholars and PREP Programs, the SURF Program for minority students, and the Strong Children's Research Summer Program.
