Support
Stipend
Students are fully funded for their entire tenure in the MD/PhD Program. Specific items that are covered include:
- Tuition (for academic year 2009-10, it is $39,700 for medical students, $37,888 for graduate students).
- Stipend throughout both medical and graduate school. Stipend for academic year 2009-10 is $25,500. The University is committed to maintaining a competitive stipend for its students, so this amount will likely increase in future years.
- Health Fees and Disability Insurance. Note that current policies allow us to cover health fees for singles and families with children.
- Microscope Rental in all years of Medical School.
Student Activity and Service Fees (approximately $300 in medical school and $200 in graduate school; subject to modest change) are not covered by the Program. In addition, a one-time fee of approximately $550, collected prior to the start of medical school, covers purchase of equipment required to conduct physical exams.
Travel
The MD/PhD Program encourages regular student participation in scientific meetings and workshops relevant to their specific area of training. Funds are generally available from departmental and laboratory resources for students actively engaged in research and presenting their own work. In addition, MD/PhD Trainees are provided a travel and research allowance of $300 per year that can be used for attending meetings outside of normal graduate student activities, including attending meetings early in their tenure at the University, attending more clinically relevant meetings, or participating in a special workshop or class. These funds can be banked across years and can also be used to purchase books, software, or other items required for scholarship. Travel expenses for students attending MD/PhD specific meetings and meetings for recruiting purposes are fully covered by the Program.
