Support Mechanisms - 2008

Interdisciplinary Research Project and Technology Development Grants

This grant program is designed to support interdisciplinary and collaborative research within one or more of the three target areas of the SPIBR. Applications may request up to $40,000, and we anticipate awarding 3-4 grants this year. Principal investigators must be full-time tenure-track faculty members within one of the SPIBR sponsoring units at the University of Rochester.

Applications should be modeled after an NIH RO3 proposal (i.e. a short RO1), and should be submitted using the NIH form 398. Follow instructions regarding the components of the form, but limit the body of the proposal to 5-pages (Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies, and Research Design and Methods). Tables, figures, Human Subjects, Vertebrate Animals, and Literature Cited can follow. Include a detailed (not modular) budget and justification, along with Bio-Sketches, Other Support, and Resources and Environment sections. Faculty salary support is specifically excluded.

Review will emphasize the significance and innovation of the proposed project, the likelihood of a successful future (e.g. new NIH RO1), the interdisciplinary/collaborative character of the project, and its relevance to one or more of the areas targeted by the SPIBR. These elements should be addressed in the proposal.

The proposal should further indicate how this mechanism would extend research objectives across disciplines to build new directions and areas of expertise among the investigators.
