DID YOU KNOW.............?
- that people with Spinal Cord Injuries can be helped to increase their independence by learning adaptive techniques and having access to the most appropriate piece of equipment? As a Regional Trauma Center, Strong has Occupational Therapists who have special training in the use of environmental control units, computers, and techniques of self care. Hint: Electronic supply stores frequently have low cost ECUs that can increase ability to turn electric appliances on and off by push button.
- that strokes affect the lives of 700,000 Americans each year. OTs work with the patients and families to return lost function by developing programs of activity that gradually increases in complexity to improve strength, dexterity, perception, cognition and self care. Starting during inpatient care, OTs work with you through the rehab process and extend their assistance as you return home and move into outpatient care. Hint: A button hook can be used for independence in one-handed buttoning.
- that in many cases, the pain and deformity associated with Arthritis
and Fibromyalgia can be reduced with proper education and life style
changes. But, how? Come and learn in our Action Program . We will
teach you to apply the principles of Energy Conservation, Active
Range of Motion, Adaptation and Joint Protection Techniques to your
everyday life. Hint: Stretch a wide rubber band around frequently
used jars and door handles making them easier to grasp and turn.
- that improper positioning of computer keyboards, mouse, and monitor in relation to your sitting position can cause repetitive motion disorders such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendinitis, and Neck Pain. Strong OTs can assist you during the initial treatment phase to decrease pain and then to help you make the life style changes that will affect a reoccurance. Hint: Your keyboard should be level and positioned approximately 1"-3" above your lap.
- that splints are frequently used to temporarily rest a sore hand or wrist. Sometimes splints that fit improperly can cause more pain ,rather than less. OTs at Strong are very skilled at custom fabricating and fitting splints that work. Hint: If the purpose of a splint is to rest your wrist, be sure that it does not also stop your thumb and fingers from moving normally.
- that scars associated with severe Burns and Traumatic Injury can limit the mobility of joints. Pressure therapy can decrease the debilitating effects of scar. Strong OTs have extensive experience in managing this symptom through their work on the Burn Unit and Hand Therapy practice. Hint: Apply sunscreen to any newly scarred areas in summer weather. New tissues are most vulnerable to sunburn.
- that you can help your child with Developmental Disabilities by providing the right environment and challenges to promote growth and change. Strong OTs participate in multidisciplinary team assessments and assist you in understanding the challenges your child may face and how to help them as they grow. Hint: Rubbing your child's hands with a towel prior to use, may encourage your child to be more aware of his/her hands and more readily able to reach for toys.
