The University of Rochester Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency is sponsored by Strong Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. The PMR residents spend the majority of their time at these two facilities and the outpatient locations that are a part of each system. Strong and St. Mary's are located approximately 3 miles (10 minutes) apart with readily available and accessible parking at each facility.

new entrance to Strong Memorial Hospital Strong Memorial Hospital is a 700 bed regional trauma and tertiary care center, and the main teaching facility for the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Strong Memorial Hospital is the largest Medical Center in the Upstate New York Region and has recently broke ground on a 400 million dollar research facility that will rank among the top in the country. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has benefited greatly from the recent market place changes in the community. Formerly a Division within the medical center, PM&R was elevated to the level of Department in 1996 to reflect the University's commitment to an integrated delivery system within the multi county region it currently serves. The PM&R Department includes a variety of innovative services and programs. Administratively it includes the region's largest Physical and Occupational therapy departments, a growing outpatient physician practice and a 20 bed acute rehabilitation unit CARF accredited in both general rehabilitation and spinal cord injury. A Federally designated Model Spinal Cord Injury Center from 1981 - 1991, the PM&R department also provides specialty spinal cord injury services including lifetime follow-up, male fertility services and baclofen pump technology.

The diverse interests of the faculty has also lead to the development of several other specialty services including amputee and musculoskeletal clinics, and electrodiagnostic services.

St. Mary's Hospital St. Mary's Hospital, a partner with Park Ridge Health System in the newly formed UNITY HEALTH SYSTEM, is a community and specialty hospital. St. Mary's is Rochester's oldest hospital, founded in 1857, and has as a part of its core mission providing services to the poor and disadvantaged, including those with disabilities. Specialty services include rehabilitation; inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, including drug and alcohol addiction services; and state of the art opthamologic surgery. The Unity Health System is in a transitional period over the next 1 to 2 years, after which the projected location of services is as follows:

  • St. Mary's Campus : Acute, subacute, and skilled nursing facility (SNF) inpatient rehabilitation; emergency and inpatient psychiatry; long-term care; full-service ER with 15-20 "short stay" beds; hospice unit; outpatient surgical center; full range of outpatient services including rehabilitation. All medical and surgical specialties will remain available for consultation at St. Mary's.

  • Park Ridge Campus: Acute medical-surgical inpatient services, including ICU/CCU, emergency room; long-term care; supported living facilities.

  • Unity Health System operates the largest rehabilitation department in the Finger Lakes region, including a nationally recognized brain injury rehabilitation program, comprised of a 3 3-bed inpatient unit and a comprehensive outpatient program. Both are in state-of-the-art newly renovated facilities (1997). In addition to traumatic brain injury, stroke, other neurologic disorders and selected orthopedic problems are admitted to the inpatient unit. The system also operates general subacute and SNF rehabilitation (currently at the Park Ridge campus, but moving to St. Mary's), 4 offsite outpatient rehabilitation programs, as well as extension clinics at several local industries. Both adult and pediatric services are provided for a wide range of neurologic and musculoskeletal diagnoses.

Over 220 electrodiagnostic studies are performed at St. Mary's annually, with expansion of electrodiagnostic capabilities to the Park Ridge campus and outpatient facilities planned for 1998. The department also offers extensive neuropsychological services, and spasticity management, including botulinum toxin injections and intrathecal baclofen.

St. Mary's also sponsors a primary care internal medicine residency program and the PMR residents have frequent clinical and educational contact with the medicine services.

The Unity Health System is a member of the Daughters of Charity National Health System, the largest non-profit health care system in the United States.
