Rochester Severe Mental Disorders Program

Clinical and Training Services:

Clinical care within the Rochester Program for Severe Mental Disorders is provided through the Strong Ties Community Support Program.  Strong Ties is an innovative community-based program that provides a complete array of services designed to promote recovery among adults with severe mental illness.  In addition to traditional clinic, case management and assertive community treatment services, Strong Ties includes peer-based services, young adult services, an array of family services, and special services for individuals at risk for repeated arrest and incarceration.  Featuring the URMC’s first community-based pharmacy, Strong Ties integrates mental health and primary medical care services to provide comprehensive and accessible healthcare.  A public-academic liaison with our local state hospital, Rochester Psychiatric Center, ensures continuity of care for individuals involved in both systems.  Also, both Strong Ties and Rochester Psychiatric Center serve as training sites for psychiatric residents, medical students, psychology interns and postdoctoral students, nursing and social work students, pharmacy students and family therapy trainees.

Strong Ties was opened in 1988 following the ground-breaking Monroe Livingston Demonstration Project, the nation’s first large capitated payment program for persons with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses.  In recent years, Strong Ties has gained national attention as a model of community care.  Awards include the 1999 American Psychiatric Association Gold Award, the 2001 American Psychiatric Nurses Association Award, the 2003 Hospital Association of New York Award, and the 2005 American Psychiatric Association Van Ameringen Award for Psychiatric Rehabilitation.
