Professional Overview

Anthony R. Pisani, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.   Dr. Pisani earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia.  He completed his predoctoral internship in Child Clinical/Pediatric Psychology at the ChildrenÕs Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Primary Care Family Psychology at the University of Rochester.  He joined the faculty of the University of Rochester in 2003.  He is currently an NRSA research fellow in the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide.  Dr. Pisani is a licensed psychologist and licensed marriage and family therapist.

Dr. Pisani focused, in the first years of his career, on clinical care, education, and clinical.  He was the director of Strong Family Therapy Services, a high volume community mental health clinic and training center that specializes in educating clinicians to work with high-risk and multi-problem individuals and families.  Dr. Pisani is the past director of psychosocial medicine education in the University of Rochester Family Medicine Residency, and past co-director of the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics rotation for the Pediatrics residency.   In these educational leadership roles, Dr. Pisani developed methods for evaluating and measuring learner outcomes.

In 2006, Dr. Pisani began to apply his educational expertise to the study of clinician education in assessment and intervention with individuals at risk for suicide.  He won a departmental award (Otto Thaler Award) to develop specific expertise this area of study by delivering and evaluating a clinician training program (Risk for Suicide:  Assessment, Documentation, and Response) across the URMC Department of Psychiatry.   Since that time, Dr. Pisani has delivered this and other trainings across New York State, sponsored by the NYS Office of Mental Health.   In 2008, Dr. Pisani began an NRSA research fellowship in the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the University of Rochester.  Dr. Pisani's current research includes a study of transfer of training to suicide hotline workers (PI: Maddy Gould; UR PI: Wendi Cross), and a study to measure change in demonstrated clinician competence in response to suicide prevention training.
