How do I know if I have a sleep disorder?
You may have a sleep disorder if you experience any of the following-
Difficulty falling asleep
or staying asleep
Waking up unrested, sleepy
or unrefreshed
Loud snoring
Being told that you stop
breathing during your sleep
Restless sleep or Daytime
sleepiness
Drowsiness with driving
or other tasks that require concentration
Are sleep disorders serious?
Yes, sleep disorders can cause a number of serious problems-
Impaired quality of life
due to daytime sleepiness
Motor vehicle and job
related accidents
High blood pressure
Increased risk for heart
disease and strokes
Can children have sleep disorders?
Yes, they can suffer from many of the same disorders that affect adults.
However, rather than appearing sleepy, children tend to have learning
difficulties and behavioral problems including hyperactivity and impaired
concentration.
How do I make an appointment?
First, talk with your primary care physician or your child's pediatrician
about your sleep concerns. Your healthcare provider will then determine
if you need to see a sleep specialist and refer you to our Sleep Disorders
Center.
You may make your appointment by calling the Strong Sleep Disorders
Center at (585) 341-7575.
When you call for your appointment, please have your referral number
and insurance information handy. We will send you a questionnaire
and possibly a sleep diary in the mail-please All these forms out
prior to your scheduled office visit. The information from the questionnaire/diary
will help our specialist understand the nature of your sleep problem
and how it's affecting your life.
What should I expect when I go to the sleep center?
A sleep consultation takes up to an hour and includes a comprehensive
history and physical exam. If an overnight sleep study or other testing
is needed we will schedule this at the end of your visit and you will
receive information about the study. Once the study has been completed,
you will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment to review the results
and discuss possible treatment options.
