Case #05 Discussion:

Penetrating trauma is usually more focal than blunt trauma. The extent of injury is typically defined by the trajectory of the penetrating object. However, injury also occurs at sites not on the object's trajectory as a result of shock waves originating at the entrance site. In this case, the rib fracture is quite possibly a result of the shock wave rather than direct contact with the bullet.
