In-Depth Experience (HYPOTHESIS-DRIVEN RESEARCH PROJECT)
Each medical student is expected to pursue study in an area of interest leading to the preparation of a hypothesis-driven, scholarly written report, which includes appropriate references. The subject may be either preclinical or clinical, in nature. Projects may be based on a literature review, a clinical problem, or a personal research experience. This in-depth experience cannot be substituted by a report prepared as a course requirement. However, a report or presentation prepared as a course requirement may serve as a starting point for the project. Summer research experiences and fellowships may provide the basis for the in-depth experience, but the time spent in a summer fellowship does not exempt the student from preparation of a written report. The planning and execution of the in-depth experience will be supervised and reviewed by a member of the University of Rochester medical faculty. Content-specific faculty committees will be responsible for final approval of all submitted reports. Approval of the completed in-depth experience is a requirement of the medical curriculum. Thus, students who do not complete and receive final approval are not eligible for graduation from the medical school.
Students who are obtaining the degree M.D. with Distinction in Research or enrolled in a M.D./Master's or M.D./Ph.D. program may fulfill this obligation either by submitting work completed as part of their combined or special degree program or by pursuing an in-depth experience in another area.
The In-Depth Experience is due not later than the last day of the required senior case seminar held in the winter of the Fourth Year.
A copy of the written report, along with a letter from your faculty sponsor documenting that the project fulfills the requirement, should be submitted to the Registrar's Office. Please note: the referenced faculty review committees will not approve the In-Depth projects of the Classes of 2001-2003.
