Women in Science, Dentistry & Medicine (WISDM)
Women in Science, Dentistry, and Medicine (WISDM), formerly the Committee on the Status of Women (COSW) was established in 1991 as an advisory committee to the Dean of the Medical School. It was established to facilitate the career development of women students, trainees, and faculty of the Medical School. The WISDM committee is composed of elected and appointed members, including graduate and medical students, trainees, basic science and clinical faculty. WISDM is committed to monitoring quality of life issues for women at the School of Medicine and Dentistry. This includes recruitment, salary and promotion, retention, and attention to work/family concerns such as child care and part-time tenure adjustments. In addition, we encourage the inclusion of gender-based biology in health research and medical school curriculum. In addition to keeping women abreast of career enriching experiences, WISDM facilitates networking among women via receptions, a Women in Medicine Directory and educational programs. The major areas in which WISDM concentrates its efforts are: Gender Bias; Career Counseling; Career Evaluation; Career Aids/Resources; Gender-based Biology.
