MEDICAL STUDENT BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (CPR) CERTIFICATIONIn light of the recommendations made by AHA and other public health organizations that all citizens, especially those in the health care industry should be certified in Basic Life Support, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry requires that all medical students be certified. Certification or re-certification will not be part of a medical school course, but will be a stand-alone session to be scheduled at the student's convenience. All entering students are required to provide the registrar's office with a copy of their certification card by December 30, of their first year of medical school. Documentation of current certification will exempt students from needing to do an original or refresher course during their first semester. Their certification and expiration dates will be entered into the MERLIN system, which will notify them of their need to be re-certified, four months prior to their certification expiration. For most students, a re-certification would be required at the end of second year or during the summer of the third year. A copy of the re-certification card would then need to be submitted to the registrar's office so the second certification and expiration dates could be entered into the MERLIN system. Certification can be obtained either through the Offices for Educational Resources or any certified agency. The Offices for Educational Resources offers American Heart Association certification (original and refresher) throughout the year at no cost to medical students. This certification is valid for two years. The Office for Educational Resources often schedules special sessions as long as there are 10 or more people. If students choose, they can contact OER to schedule special all student sessions. Although students have until December 30, to complete the certification process, they are encouraged to complete the requirement as soon as possible. |
