Improving Patient Safety

Below, a sample scenario depicts how IT tools could not only improve efficiency, but also incorporate more safety-checks to promote more careful medication administration. By scanning codes on the patient wristband, medicine bottle and Smart Pump, and then cross-referencing the CPOE system, they can ensure that the right patient receives the right dose of the right medicine at the right time from the right caregiver. Any discrepancies flag an alert, which allows clinicians to review the order information and ultimately, avoid an adverse event.
