Respecting Your Privacy of Protected Health Information

Respecting your private health information is something we take very seriously here at Strong Memorial Hospital. We will work with you to protect your privacy while making sure there is appropriate sharing of protected health information to provide consistent, high quality care. It is your choice as to how much of your private health information and history you want to share with your family. Upon your approval, we want to maintain the ability to openly and easily communicate appropriate information with your loved ones.

There are several measures in place to protect your health information. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), is a federal law that puts you in control of how your health information will be disclosed to your family and support person(s) and used by health system staff members. Because sharing information should be happening throughout your hospital stay, exactly how you choose to share your health information becomes an on-going conversation between you and your healthcare team.

We are constantly teaching staff members that privacy is a top priority and training them to continually ask your permission before discussing any health related topics in front of your visitors. Respecting your wishes is one of our core values, which is why we will not talk openly with anyone about your health history without checking with you first. If a particular topic is sensitive to you, please tell one of your medical team members so they can manage the conversation with your visitor or family member appropriately.

In the event that you are unable to communicate, please know that your medical team will refer to the trusted family or friend listed in your completed health care proxy. You can follow this link to learn more and conveniently download a health care proxy form for your use.
