RN Clinical Advancement Levels
Level 1
GNs and RNs with limited acute care experience begin at Level I to develop strong basic care skills.
Level 2
The Level II nurse provides competent care to patients, assumes the charge nurse role, actively participates in unit/service activities, supports co-workers, and assesses unit needs. Acute care experience is required.
Level 3
The Level III nurse provides proficient care to patients, including those with complex patients, directs others, and has opportunities to serve as a care coordinator or preceptor. A minimum of 3 years nursing experience is recommended.
Senior Level 3
The Senior Level III Nurse provides expert patient care by acting as a preceptor, assisting others in the development of charge nurse behaviors and serving as a positive role model. The Senior Level III Nurse routinely attends and shares information from hospital or external professional organization meetings and initiates changes in unit or departmental policy, procedure, or standards. A minimum of 2 years at level III nursing experience is recommended.
Level 4--Nurse Leader
The Nurse Leader provides expert practice by managing patient care, staff and unit/service activities. Opportunities are available to specialize in unit/program, or service areas that include unit recruitment/retention activities, program planning and the development of others. A minimum of 5 years nursing experience and a BSN or matriculation in a BSN program is recommended.
All positions require a Diploma, Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Nursing Program and an active New York State RN license in good standing
