Advanced Practice Nursing Levels

All Advanced Practice Nurse positions require an active New York State license in good standing and require a Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field and 5 years experience as an RN with one to three years of leadership experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Clinical

Level 5-- Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist

Influences the quality and delivery of care in various roles including consultant, researcher, mentor, and practitioner.  This role may be unit, program or service based and is involved in continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Level 6--Senior Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist

Demonstrates leadership by functioning collaboratively with other members of the health care team, participating proactively to influence health care policies and standards, presenting at regional/national levels, consulting, conducting research, directing programs or projects.  Holds a faculty appointment at School of Nursing and contributes to SON goals and objectives.

Management

Level 5--Nurse Manager

Directs all aspects of patient care, which includes managing nursing personnel and material resources in a cost-effective manner, promoting unit learning and initiation of innovative clinical and management practices with an emphasis on retention strategies.

Level 6--Senior Nurse Manager

Demonstrates leadership by functioning collaboratively with other members of the health care team, participating in research, presenting at regional/national levels, mentoring, consulting, implementing practice related programs.  Holds a faculty appointment at School of Nursing.

What is Magnet Status?

Magnet Status is an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to hospitals that satisfy a demanding set of criteria measuring the strength and quality of their nursing. This international nursing quality designation is enjoyed by only about 5% of hospitals in the country.
