Vascular Surgery Residency Program

The Vascular Residency is a two year program that incorporates a year of imaging with a traditional surgical residency. This is possible because the Section of Intervention Radiology and the Division of Vascular Surgery have a combined practice with unrestricted use of the facilities. It is expected that at the conclusion of the two years, the graduating resident will meet all existing minimal criteria for intereventinal credentials. Residents will gain specific expertise in renal artery stenting, catheter-directed thrombolysis and stent graft deployment. Our IR section performs over 8000 procedures per year. The vascular residents have performed between 350-600 IR procedures each year.

Year One: Each resident spends one day per week in the interventional suites under the supervision of an interventional radiologist or a vascular surgeon. In addition, the first year resident takes IR night and weekend call on a shared basis with the two IR fellows. During this year, the resident is expected to learn diagnostic ultrasound and office based vascular surgery. Opportunities are available both in basic science and in clinical research. The vascular biology group consist of five PhDs and one MD, PhD. Areas of study are in the areas of vascular endothelial growth factor, intimal hyperplasia, and the effects of radiation on vascular wall function.

Year Two: The second year is primarily clinical. The resident is responsible for the vascular surgical service. Numbers of procedures are consistently over the 95th percentile. There is an active program in aortic surgery that uses conventional and endoluminal therapies. Approximately 1000 index cases are performed each year.

Conferences: There is a weekly conference attended by the six vascular surgeons, two vascular fellows, five interventional radiologists and two IR fellows. In addition, an endograft sizing conference is held for all those interested. Monthly Journal Club meetings, often with a Visiting Professor, are held.

We are committed to providing the very best training so that our residents will enter into academic practice with a broad but complete education. It our hope that our Vascular Residents will continue within academia and that they will inspire others with their skills and knowledge.
