Department of Surgery Overview

The Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is a leader in patient care, investigative research, and surgical education. The Faculty is dedicated to promoting excellence in all areas of surgical specialty.

As one of the country's leading university-based institutions, the University of Rochester Medical Center is proud to provide our patients with treatment options from surgeons who are at the frontiers of their field.

Our surgeons are more than highly skilled doctors. They are dedicated to the most humanistic approach to the treatment of disease and injury.  We explore the best surgical options in the broadest context of the patient’s overall health and life circumstances, treating each patient with the most individualized care possible.  Not satisfied with providing the highest standard of existing care—we work to develop tomorrow’s care through our clinical and basic science investigations.

All of this occurs in the context of training the next generation of surgeons and researchers, a responsibility in which our faculty takes great pride.

New Life Through Liver Transplantation

“In the U.S. there are approximately 120 active liver transplant programs. Among those there are only about 10 that transplant more than 100 patients per year, and we have been working at that level for the past five years,” says Adel Bozorgzadeh, M.D., Chief of the Division of Solid Organ Transplantation Surgery. “We are one of only a handful of programs accredited for live donor liver and kidney transplants.”

Our transplant surgeons and physicians are national leaders, familiar with the most advanced technology and techniques.  We deliver state-of-the-art care enhanced by our strong involvement in education and research.
