Mission and Philosophy
Three days after Strong Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1926, the first surgery was performed—a testament to the integral nature of the Department of Surgery to the University of Rochester Medical Center since its very inception. Today the Department of Surgery accounts for over one third of Strong Memorial Hospital’s operative volume and is at the cutting edge of surgical care, education and research.
The faculty is committed to promoting excellence in all areas of the surgical specialties and to the highly personalized treatment of patients and their diseases. Humanism is a priority.
“We strive not only to provide the finest clinical care to all patients but to provide that care in an atmosphere that places patients and their concerns first,” says Department Chairman Jeffrey H. Peters, M.D., F.A.C.S. “We are not satisfied with providing the best possible existing care—we work to develop tomorrow’s care through clinical and basic science investigations. Training the next generation of surgeons and researchers is a fundamental responsibility of our faculty along with supporting innovation and invention at all levels of the surgical sciences.”
