Surgical Health Outcomes & Research Enterprise (SHORE)

Fellowship

The Surgery Resident Research Fellowship is a two-year long integrated program in which Surgery Residents work with close mentorship to develop skills in clinical, outcomes, and health services research.  Following their second or third year of residency, the research fellow is incorporated into a hybrid program of highly productive clinical research labs combined with didactic education through the Masters of Public Health program at the University of Rochester.  Research Fellows learn skills in biostatistics, epidemiology, survey research, risk-adjustment analyses, qualitative analysis, cost-effectiveness research, and grant writing among others.  The fellows have the benefit of being located in the brand new offices of SHORE located within the CTSI and in the same building as their classes and potential collaborators.

Beyond the Masters of Public Health program, SHORE fellows are also included in a surgery specific research curriculum which includes an overview of important research skills (i.e. pubmed searching, available resources, ethics and IRB training) and monthly presentations to visiting professors where feedback on ongoing projects is provided.  By the end of the research fellowship the surgery resident gains ample experience in poster presentations, oral presentations, manuscript publication, and grant submission in addition to completion of a Masters in Public Health degree.  As part of the requirements for completion of the Masters program a thesis will be developed under the supervision of an advisory committee with the ultimate goal of publication in a peer reviewed journal.  The Surgery Resident Research Fellowship is the ideal research experience for training the academic surgeons of the future due to its focus on scientific methodology, mentoring by trained faculty in both surgery and health services, and by providing a collaborative environment all fostering career development in research specifically in quality and outcomes research.

Since inception (July 2011) 2 trainee’s have completed the 2 year program successfully, 1 trainee has finished 1 year, and 2 trainees will be joining in July.
