  • John RT Monson, MD, FRCS, FASCRS, FACS Director SHORE
    • MonsonDr. Monson is recognized internationally as a leading authority in the management of rectal cancer and cancer related health care policy implementation. He leads several international clinical collaboratives in colorectal cancer. Dr. Monson is currently Vice-President of OSTRiCh and continues to advise the Royal College of Surgeons on policy implementation. The national Consortium for Optimizing Surgical Treatment of Rectal Cancer (OSTRiCh) consists of 17 leading centers in CRC care from across US, including Cleveland Clinic, the world center and leader for cancer care, clinical trials, internationally known cancer research efforts and excellence in healthcare. Dr. Monson has recently Chaired the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Guidelines Panel and is senior author on the 2012 Practice Guidelines for Rectal Cancer Care.Throughout his career, Dr. Monson has been involved in health services and outcomes research and training at all levels. He has a particular interest in the field of cancer care health service delivery and played a critical role in the implementation of the Calman-Hine Cancer Services report in the UK resulting in the development of Cancer Centers and Cancer Units. He was appointed the first chairman of the National Training Scheme in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery in the United Kingdom. Before coming to Rochester Dr. Monson was Chairman of a Regional Implementation panel for the National Cancer Plan in the UK and Director of the Regional Cancer Center.  In this role he led the introduction of process based care delivery for Rectal Cancer in the largest health region in the UK. At that time he was advisor to the Minister of Health and the Department of Health and worked closely with the NHS on the transformation of cancer care in the UK.

    • NoyesDr. Katia Noyes, Professor of Surgery and Public Health Sciences and Scientific Director of Surgical Health Outcomes & Research Enterprise (SHORE), is a health services researcher with expertise in quality of care assessment, comparative effectiveness research, and health outcomes and economic evaluations in healthcare. She is co-Director of Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) Key Function Committee for the University of Rochester Clinical and Translation Science Institute, and co-Director of Center for Research Implementation and Translation (CRIT) at the URMC.  Dr. Noyes has extensive experience working with interdisciplinary research teams on projects involving research, healthcare delivery and public health organizations funded by the NIH, AHRQ and other public and private sources. She has over 40 publications on quality measures, reimbursement, and cost-effectiveness of medical care. Dr. Noyes is has been involved in and led studies on evaluation of quality of life, cost and quality of long-term interventions, including cost-effectiveness of treatment for bladder, breast, and colorectal cancer, use of implantable cardiac defibrillators, telemedicine, and effect of frailty on costs and quality of care.

    • Fergal Fleming, MD is a colorectal surgeon and an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Oncology with research interest and expertise in the field of surgical outcomes research and over 40 peer reviewed publications in this arena. I am particularly interested in exploring the barriers to the implementation of evidence based medicine in everyday clinical practice.
      I am actively engaged in studying the issue of venous thromboembolism having published both original articles and an invited editorial in this field. I have experience in mentoring surgical trainees, including dedicated research fellows.
