UCAR Policy Species Specific Training Modules

Adopted by the University Committee on Animal Resources on February 21, 2007

In order to insure that personnel working with animals have appropriate training for their work, UCAR has added the following mandatory training for all personnel working with various species  and those who perform recovery surgery in rodents (rats and mice): Training in Basic Biomethodology for Mice; Training in Survival Rodent Surgery; Some Preferred Techniques for the Laboratory Rabbit; Some Preferred Techniques for the Laboratory Guinea Pig; Some Preferred Techniques for the Laboratory Gerbil and Hamster; The Rat: Recommended Technical Procedures; The Marshall Ferret: Its Care and Use in Biomedical Research; Working with Laboratory Animals: The Dog and Primate Safety Orientation.  All PI’s and their staff must document that they have observed the training CDs, DVD or VHS and return the documentation to the UCAR Office.

For new laboratory personnel, the training material must be reviewed prior to adding personnel to UCAR protocols.  Access to the animal housing rooms and Vivarium will not be granted until this training is complete.  If you do not comply with training requirements, you may not work with animals.

All training CDs, DVDs, VHS and documentation forms are available in the UCAR Office. If you have any questions regarding the training modules, please contact the UCAR Office at X5-1693.
