Endpoints in in vivo Studies Involving Tumors

The following general guidelines have been developed by UCAR with the input of a number of investigators who perform studies involving tumor growth in both rabbits and rodents. While legitimate exceptions to these guidelines are recognized, these guidelines must be followed unless a scientifically based exemption is requested, presented, and specifically approved by UCAR. It is believed that the majority of experiments utilizing transplantable or otherwise induced tumors can be performed using these guidelines.

  1. If the tumors compromise the animal's ability to move about, eat, or drink, the animal must be euthanitized or the tumor excised.

  2. The tumor burden should ordinarily not exceed 10% of the animal's body weight and never exceed 20% of body weight.

  3. Under most circumstances, if tumors become excoriated, infected, or both, the animal must be euthanitized or treated by the DLAM veterinary staff.

  4. Death as an end-point is to be discouraged, whenever possible, and its use must be scientifically justified and approved by UCAR.
